‘Fired Up’ for Palin?

One of the great things about being both a blogger and a journalist is the opportunity to recycle what I’ve previously blogged for a different readership, as in my Tuesday column for The American Spectator:

The dismissive sneers of Palin’s detractors were, quite literally, front-page news in the local press. “You tend to get a sense now that the times have passed by her.… People are looking elsewhere,” a University of New Hampshire political science professor said in an article splashed across the top of the front page of Sunday’sManchester Union Leader. That article also quoted the head of a New Hampshire conservative group who jeered at Palin, the 2008 GOP vice-presidential nominee, for “stringing the media along” and playing a “coy game” about her 2012 plans. People are “kind of over Sarah Palin at this point,” Kevin Smith, executive director of Cornerstone Action, told the Union Leader, saying that her long-delayed decision “is turning people off.”
The people at Veterans Memorial Park, however, weren’t turned off nor were they “over Sarah Palin.” Many traveled long distances to attend the event, including Mary Watson, a law student at Virginia’s George Mason University who had come to New Hampshire to distribute flyers for Students4Palin.com. What got her so fired up for Palin? “What is there not to be fired up about?” Watson answered. And like the Mama Grizzly’s hard-core supporters everywhere, she is “absolutely” certain that Palin will enter the 2012 race. “She’s biding her time and we’re all getting ready for her,” Watson said. “We’re gearing up, so whenever she says the word, we’re ready.” . . .

    My understanding of New Hampshire’s GOP is that it has been voiding its TEA Partiers and conservatives, returning it to its elite clique status: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/01/new-hampshire-gop-chair-jack-kimball-resigns/

    So quick are the elites to call themselves Conservative, and to dismiss Palin, much to the delight of the press and the DNC.

    I think it is ridiculous that so many are trying to say Palin’s criticism of “crony capitalism” is aimed at Perry, who she just last year endorsed and campaigned for.  These are hacks trying to stir the pot.

    In fact, in several of her recent speeches, Palin has specifically used the phrase “crony capitalism IN WASHINGTON DC” which pretty well excludes Perry, having never served there, doesn’t it?

    It was always clear to me she was speaking of Obama and his favored toadies like Goldman Sachs, the big unions, and now this phony green jobs scam in California which took the taxpayers half a billion dollars in loan guarantees (apparently with pressure from Obama to skip the evaluation step for loans) and made the money and the jobs disappear in less than two years.

    Also, when I click through to the Spectator, I get a pop-up advising me that if every visitor gave them $1, they could cover their budget.  Say, if all their visitors gave me a dollar, too, I could cover my budget AND buy a pony.

    My resources are too strained to donate to anybody right now – thanks, Obama! – but do they seriously think annoying people with popover ads is going to generate a groundswell of donations?

    Even in better times, my policy (and I suspect many others’) was to NEVER buy anything that advertised with pop-ups, popovers, or popunders.

    I don’t understand why everyone finds pop-ups etc. so annoying after all there is no free lunch.

    Most appeals of this type annoy the Hell out of me.  More people and organizations should do it the way Stacy does: with wit and charm.
