StormWatch 2011: Mass Hysteria!

Hurricane Irene has inspired non-stop TV fear-mongering. The cable news networks are giving us around-the-clock disaster and 24/7 catastrophe — apocalyptic forecasts worthy of Dr. Peter Venkman:

This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions! Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

Question: If this hurricane hits New York City, will liberals blame Bush or global warming, or both?

UPDATE: “New York Hurricane Could Be Multibillion-Dollar Catastrophe” — or it “could be” basically some heavy thunderstorms. But why miss a perfectly good opportunity to fear-monger, eh?

    I’m in New York where any potential storm generates mass hysteria in the media, to the point of “crying wolf” and I fear that people may simply ignore the warnings about this one. I’m up in the Hudson Valley and my biggest worry is a prolonged power outage because we’ll have no water (we’re on a well) and also wind damage because my house is surrounded by big trees (I live in the country). I’m more worried about my family on Long Island than anything else though, but they know the drill for such weather events and will do what they need to do to stay safe, I am sure.     To answer your question, if New York City gets wrecked up, it will definitely be blamed on George W. Bush, GoreBull Warming, the TEA Party, and anti-jihad right wing bloggers.

    Silly question. Since GWB is to blame for global warming, the only possible answer is, “both.”

    It’s all hype, until it hits.  Then people wail, “Why didn’t anybody tell us?”

    Back in the days of only three TV networks, on the eve of Camille one reporter interviewed a crowd of college-aged kids who had rented the top (4th or 5th) floor of a beachfront hotel for a Hurricane Party.  The staff was evacuating, but left them access to everything.  They were laughing and joking about watching the landfall from the balconies.

    Next day the reporter went back.  No hotel, no survivors.

    Three years later, I visited Nelson County in Virginia.  You could still see the water marks high on the sides of the valley where an entire farming community was wiped out by a flood.

    Because the Northeast rarely gets significant
    hurricanes, and because the greater NYC area is so crowded, they are
    especially ill-prepared for the hurricanes that they do get.
    You really don’t want to be in the subways when there’s a storm surge.

    Whatever damage it does it will be an excuse to ask for ten times more disaster relief funds than is actually needed. That’s what all the hype is about now. It’s a wonder they don’t ask for funds to help people cope with the trauma of the thoughts of what it might do. Coulter nailed people’s attitudes about disaster situations on Hannity last night, making fun of people’s reactions to the earthquake.

    “Our hearts and prayers go out to those who almost lost their balance.” I almost fell off the couch laughing.

    I just hope NYC doesn’t lose power.  During the Great Blackout of 77, there was lootin’ n shootin’.  Burnin’.  Worse – people got all Biblical on one another.  To pass the time, they got to “know” one another.  In the Biblical sense.

    Last thing this country needs is a proglet boom.
