Expecting the Unexpected

The media have nearly warn out an adverb — “Unexpectedly!” — in describing bad economic news in the past two years. So what should we expect when we read a sentence that begins like this?

“Few economists are predicting an
out-and-out return to recession, but . . .”

Which prompts concerns for the Lonely Conservative:

Um, are these the same economists who are caught by surprise week, after week, after week, when the miserable reports come out on new jobless claims?
I can see the headlines now: “Economists Caught Off Guard By Second Dip Into Recession.”

Apparently, CNN gave up on their usual “experts,” and resorted to wizards, necromancers and witch doctors. (And no, I don’t mean Tim Geithner and Ben Bernanke.)

But we don’t need crystal balls and Ouija boards to predict the economic future. If Greece goes belly-up, it’s doom.
