GOP SCANDAL: Which Senators Are Protecting Backstabber Lisa Murkowski?

Posted on | September 29, 2010 | 43 Comments

When she lost the GOP primary in August, she refused to concede, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee flew its top lawyer to Anchorage to advise her. When the absentee ballots were finally counted, Murkowski conceded the Republican nomination — but secretly continued her desperate intrigues to retain her Senate seat. In a shameful course of action that would make notorious Catilline blush, Murkowski’s Palin-hating henchmen John Bitney and Andrew Halcro first sought to get her the Libertarian Party nomination. Rebuffed by the Libertarians, the Bitney/Halcro faction then promoted Murkowski as a write-in candidate.

Despite Murkowski’s perfidy, in a secret meeting last week, Senate Republicans declined to strip her of her status as ranking member of the Energy Committee. And now National Review is asking the important question: Which GOP Senators are protecting Murkowski, enabling her to tell Alaska voters that her Senate seniority is an asset worth retaining?

The answer, so far, seems to be “some of the usual suspects”:

[Lindsey] Graham tells us that he is “OK” with Murkowski keeping her ranking status.

Worthless bastard.

Just a thought – not a defense – Murlowski might be holding her ’41st’ vote over their heads in the lame duck session of congress. Every vote will be needed to stop the crap we’re likely to get in the lame duck session.

If they can’t lose Murky, we need to know who they are.

There are a whole lot of primaries coming up in 2012 before the General then, and we need to know who to be getting rid of.

Other than Lindsey, of course. That one goes without saying, I think.

To paraphrase Riehl over at his blog, apparently some more primaries are in order.

Seriously, will these morons ever learn? Don’t they realize the coming tsunami is not just about getting Democrats out of power? It’s about their friggin attitudes of entitlement?

    Idiots!

Singling out Lindsey Graham is i think a bit unfair. If Jim DeMint wishes he could easily make Murkowski’s committee membership an issue. It is not beyond his capability to hold the GOP caucus at hostage just as he threatened to shut down the Senate.

I believe the blame is collective. There is no point in intensifying calls for a witch hunt with each Murkowski favorable poll. Moreover, punishing Murkowski by stripping her of the GOP committee rank can have the opposite effect of bringing more sympathy to Murkowski in Alaska.

I spoke with Senator Richard Burr’s office about this today. His rep seemed in genuine agreement with me that keeping her on the committee was not right, and was shocked when I mentioned today’s CNN/Time poll showing Murkwski within 2 points of Miller. She sounded exasperated. Burr doesn’t often take a stand (it would help him if he would), and would benefit by becoming ranking member of Energy, but from what I heard today, I’m assuming he was against the caucus’s decision.

    Answer: MIKE CASTLE

Question: Who’s less of a douche? Murkowski or Castle?

Castle just announced he WON’T be seeking a write-in bid for Delaware’s open Senate seat.

Of course it is the usual suspects protecting “Sen.” Murky. Start with Sen. Graham, work your way to that imbecile, Sen. Cornball, er Cornyn. There are some things we should stand on principle. And one is that when one loses the party nomination, go out like a man. Yea, even in “Sen.” Murky’s case. A man. When she has the nerve to do what she is doing, she is no longer a Republican. Period. Thus, strip her bare of anything to indicate that she is a Republican. In the end, the good people of Alaska are gonna send “Sen.” Murky back home with daddy. GO JOE MILLER!

Keep in mind, it’s easy to vote for Lisia Mirkausqui in a poll where she’s “on the ballot” — unlike the actual, you know, ballot.

I really don’t see what the issue is here. Granted, she lost the primary but she IS still a member of the senate until January so why shouldn’t she be allowed to keep her committee positions until January when committees are realigned anyway? It’s a non-issue. We’ve got bigger fish to fry.

why shouldn’t she be allowed to keep her committee positions

By running against the Republican nominee she has in effect declared herself outside her party’s caucus.

Unfortunately we have a party caucus that only defends itself against those who want the party to stand for something.
