Dan Riehl Has His Own ‘Ilk’?

Posted on | September 4, 2010 | 40 Comments

According to Stephen Bainbridge:

By letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, Riehl and his ilk are ensuring themselves of a pure minority.

The rest of us in the blogosphere are now jealous of Dan. What do we have to do to get our own ilks?

Is supporting Christine O’Donnell sufficient to qualify us as members of the Riehl ilk? I’m thinking he could make some money off this: “Dan Riehl Got His Own Ilk and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt.”

BTW, I’m back home. The flight from Anchorage sucked. I took a red-eye, but only got two hours’ sleep on the plane. Just now woke up from a two-hour nap. Still feeling fuzzy-brained.

Update (Smitty): Yep, that one’s for the books (h/t the Mighty Melissa):

I don’t think one gets to “have their own Ilk” but rather one must be content with being part of “an Ilk”. On the bright side you don’t have ick either.

I like Bainbridge (his wine picks are great, he has good taste in cigars, and he knows how to rail against Sarbanes-Oxley), but he is wrong to make this personal. And Riehl is no fool and Bainbridge should pause before shooting a champagne cork at him.

I am on the fence about O’Donnell v. Castle. I see the wisdom of another red senator in a very blue state, getting us closer to a Senate majority. I also like the symbolism of taking Biden’s seat. I also recognize that Castle is weak weak Republican (far weaker than McCain). But you know something, I do not live in Delaware. Now there are challenges to the status quo that make no sense whatsoever (Hayworth against Mac Daddy McCain). That was the best Arizona could come up with? WTF?

And there are picks that make complete sense–Miller against Murkowski.

O’Donnell is a more ambiguous politican. But you also have to balance that against Castle’s electability vs. what you will get if he wins. So when Ace, Allah and Bainbridge point out her flaws, we should welcome that. When Riehl, Levin, and Smitty-RSM make the defense for O’Donnell, I listen to that too.

And ulitmately, it comes down to Republicans in Delaware to make the choice.

Ok, Bainbridge, have it your way.

I’m an Ilk. You are a quasi-socialist, appeasing, compromising…(I have deleted the next 84 words because I do not use profanity on the internets.)

If he and his cohorts (I’d call them his “Ilk”, but that’d be an insult to those of us who are Dan Riehl’s ilk.) best start worrying about appeasing us, and not the rapidly evaporating RINO group.

Otherwise, they’ll be as extinct as the Cave Bear or the Giant Sloth. OTOH, that wouldn’t be a bad thing, overall.

I would have picked Simmons over McMahon in Connecticut in the primaries. But once McMahon won, Connecticut Republicans have to support her over Blumenthal.

So if Castle beats O’Donnell, so not sit it out like some cry baby. And if O’Donnell beats Castle, all you Castlephiles better back her.

jefferson101: what % of the U.S. population would agree that the Prof. is a “quasi-socialist”? I think there’s your answer right there, although I don’t think you or those of your ilk are smart and stable enough to realize it.

P.S. Both Riehl and the Prof. have deleted my comments showing how they were wrong. So: ha ha. Since the Prof. is probably a good deal smarter than Riehl and has higher-level support, I’d expect him to win the Tussle of the Antfarm.

Pretty good comment from Bainbridge’s place. Well, Stacy may not care for Sherman references, but what the heck, he has a point:

RINO defenders make the mistake of thinking tactically, as opposed to strategically. One of the grisly duties of winning generals like Grant or Sherman was to post guards who would shoot panicky soldiers who lacked the will, courage, or steadfastness to stay at the front and support their fellow soldiers. If the Maine ladies, and currently McCain & Graham know they run the risk of getting shot for desertion, they’ll be likely to stay at the front lines and fire away at the Dems. Graham & McCain are showing signs of stiffening their spine already.

But bottom line, as others have commented, Castle is NOT a 50% vote. There is no half a loaf to take & run with, just crumbs. Christy O granted has a less than 50% chance of winning, but its NOT zero. And even if it were, Castle’s corpse would serve as a useful example.

    I don’t see how you could be of Riehl’s ilk – I mean, didn’t the guy come from Joizy? That’s a very ilky place . . .

But all conservatives need to understand that we aren’t going to win seats in all the darker blue states with conservatives. It’s just reality. We will have to accept a few Snowes, Collinses, and Browns if we want seats in those states for now, and Castle is in a similar situation. O’Donnell and others who step up to run are declaring themselves ready for prime time, and what I’ve seen of her, and Angle, and Paul so far isn’t ringing the bell. At least Paul’s people have had the good common sense to put a ball gag in his mouth and keep him locked in a closet somewhere until after the election.

Take Hayworth – please! The guy’s a crooked, nutty loser. Now, if Shadegg or Flake had made the run, they might have had a chance, but they didn’t because McCain had the leftover money and no reason not to spend it. He was effectively unbeatable except against a self-funding billionaire.

The money spent on Hayworth was wasted, PERIOD. Heck, a 30-point loss doesn’t even “send McCain a message” – unless the message is, “I’m a loser!” There will be a couple of congressional seats we might have taken with the money thrown away there.

All I can say is, I’m with Joe on supporting the winners of the primaries, including Angle and Paul and O’Donnell if she wins, BUT: if any of them blow what should be a sure seat for the GOP, I will blame Riehl AND his ilk for those losses, and be around to remind y’all about it every time an extra vote or two in House or Senate might make the difference in the next two years.

Re-education. Its the progressive way. They have infiltrated the school system to the point that our schools are failing.

My wife took a summer course given by a professor who railed against Republicans and right. She was a visiting professor from South America who literally spent 2 months trying to brain wash the kids into hating their own country by pointing out every perceived evil that ever existed or exists in America.

I asked her why it didnt bother her to take the class and she simply said “Hell thats what we are forced to teach everyday in Kindergarten in America”

This foreign born professor teaching on a Visa was not saying anything that we are not telling our own kids in our own classrooms.

Re-Education. It really is going on. Today. In your child’s classroom.

Estragon, they said this guy was a poor pick too. And he had some weird accusations tossed at him. And it looks like he might win.

This is not an easy pick. O’Donnell is certainly more conservative than Castle (which is in her favor) but she has some questionable things about her which may make her unelectable in the general and which should give one pause (if true, and that is a big if).

Castle is weak, beyond RINO to DIABLO, and anyone who is voting Cap and Trade is dead to me.

Riehl’s best point is merely gaining a majority in the Senate is nothing if Republicans do not lead on conservative issues. But getting a majority in the Senate is a worthy goal.

I want all the information out there. After that, I trust Delaware Republicans to do the right thing. And whoever loses better back the winner 100%.
