Fear and Loathing in Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — I’m at a sound stage near Santa Monica Boulevard where Ladd Ehlinger Jr. is directing his latest series of political ads. There is something of an embargo about the exact nature of the production, and I’m on deadline for The American Spectator, so I can’t give you the full story now. However, I thought I’d share a few photos from the past couple of days in La-La Land.

You may not recognize either of these two characters and, as much as I’d like to identify them, I’m afraid you can’t handle the truth.


Actress Michelle Fields with rising young comedian Evan Sayet. Believe it or not, Michelle won her part after reading about Ehlinger’s casting call via my Twitter feed. Now, if only Alyssa Milano would do the same . . .

Andrew Breitbart checks e-mail at his home near Sepulveda Boulevard. I dropped by Chez Breitbart on my way back from Saturday’s blogger lunch in Santa Monica.

Little Miss Atilla, Richard McEnroe of Three Beers Later, me, Mattie Fein, Dan from Gay Patriot and Joe Fein of Valley of the Shadow. Mattie and Joe share the same surname, but are not related. I’m not sure which one of them will soon be blogging as TheOtherFein.com. One thing for sure: Everybody had a Fein time at El Cholo in Santa Monica.

There are those of us who suspect that Dan from Gay Patriot may be a closet hetero, NTTAWWT.

Mattie Fein takes a break from updating her Facebook page to check her Blackberry, but still no messages from Nick Green. I’ve been trying to give Mattie lessons in advanced Twitterology, although neither of us has been re-Tweeted by Alyssa Milano. Yet.

UPDATE: As Jehuda the Rhetorican reports, Ladd just filmed me in my comedy acting debut. I did it gratis, but we’ll probably need arbitration to determine if Da Tech Guy‘s fedora gets union scale

    It was fun to meet Mattie, Ladd, and John T.–and to finally speak with Joe and Richard in person. Also lovely to speak with Richard’s GF, and touch base with Dan again.

    Won’t make it today–looks like I’m going directly from that late lunch to my dinner meeting. Dang.

    But, Stacy . . . “Actress Michelle Fields with rising young comedian, Evan Sayet.” PLEASE remove that comma.

    Always nice to have a blog-pal describing his brethren in complimentary ways. And given the circumstances, I have no doubt that Evan Sayet was or will be rising in comedy, conservatism and perhaps other ways. Sounds like a great road trip!

    Ye gads! Please tell me those two characters aren’t actually portraying real military personnel in anything!

    The female Marine’s (Alpha service) uniform has buttons instead of the correct eagle, globe and anchor emblems (with the bottom of the anchor facing inward) on the collar.

    Unless she’s a private, she should have rank insignia either on the sleeves (if enlisted) or epaulets (if officer). It looks like she may be purportedly an officer (insignia, possible a colonel’s eagle, partially visible on the shirt collar).

    The rifle and pistol badges should be centered from the edges of the pocket, should be straight instead of crooked, and the bottoms of their top bars should be 1/8″ above the pocket, not resting on the top of the pocket. Likewise, the bottom of the ribbons should be 1/8″ above the top of the shooting badges.

    The buckle of the belt should be centered at the front, and there should only be 2-3 inches of belt end extending from it.

    The alleged sailor looks like hell too, but I’m pretty sure that Navy regulations require him to.

    What makes you think I’m a “military type?” I’ve been out of uniform for 15 years.

    Details are important. If you have a character who’s supposed to be a Catholic priest sashaying down the hall wearing a yarmulke, wearing an ankh necklace and carrying a Quran, you didn’t get it right, people will notice, and a significant percentage who notice will assume that you didn’t get it right because you don’t give a fuck what the Catholics think.

    The importance of details when it comes to portraying military personnel is heightened by the fact that when it comes to military uniform code the detail is sufficient that there’s a very thin line between being smartly turned out and looking like a sack of crap.

    Unless the message of whatever commercial was being filmed is “we think that military personnel look like sacks of crap,” it’s a fail on account of details.
