EMERGENCY: SAVE STOGIE!
Posted on | July 31, 2010 | 129 Comments
OK, folks, no kidding around this time, it’s time to help a friend in urgent need:
Home foreclosures are continuing at a brisk pace, according to an article by McClatchy News. Many of the first foreclosures that began three years ago, when the housing bubble began to burst, were for subprime mortgages. Now, however, a fresh batch of foreclosures is occurring because people have lost their jobs and can’t pay them. I am now in that category. I didn’t pay my July mortgage payment and probably will miss August as well. I haven’t been answering the phone, which rings constantly from bill collectors.
Our savings kept us afloat for a year. When it was gone, I borrowed the equity out of my life insurance. That’s gone too. We were hoping to ride out this recession, to survive until it was over. However, it is the longest lasting and deepest recession I have ever seen. . . . .
It’s just a matter of weeks before I lose my home. . . . I am a college graduate and a CPA. Accountants were supposed to be immune from unemployment. Not any more. . . .
GO HIT STOGIE’S TIP JAR NOW! Every $5 or $10 helps, folks. This post will be sticky at the top of the page for a couple of days, and I’ll urge my blogger friends to join this campaign.
UPDATE: Thanks to Bob Belvedere at Camp of the Saints, Red at Caught Him With a Corndog, Pete at Da Tech Guy and Fisherville Mike for joining Operation Save Stogie.
Coincidentally or not, the news today highlights how Obamanomics has failed to address the kind of situation Stogie is facing. Here’s a Huffington Post headline:
Dwindling Retirement Savings ‘Undiscussed Explosive Bomb’ Of Recession
. . . Aside from stagnant wages, soaring unemployment and plummeting home values, the major tragedy of this recession is the havoc it has wreaked on the retirement incomes of millions of Americans who have planned and saved their entire lives, only to watch that money drain out of their accounts much sooner than they anticipated.
Retirement statistics are grim. The percentage of American workers who said they have less than $10,000 in savings grew to 43 percent in 2010, according to a recent survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. . . .
And even liberals like Chris Hayes of the Nation are now denouncing the “HAMP” mortgage-adjustment program as “the single biggest failure of the Obama Administration” — which is some pretty stiff competition!
Stogie says thanks to those who’ve hit his tip jar during this emergency, and if you haven’t contributed yet, please do so today.
UPDATE: Georgia homegirl Obi’s Sister joins the campaign.

Since I cannot post links here and because the blog owners have block my ability to post a trackback link or ANY LINK… I will say this:
My point was and is is…. that nobody bailed my butt out back in 2004, when I had to file for bankruptcy. I’ve had a tip jar on my blog forever; no one has even given a dime to me, that I know from the Blogosphere. I don’t celebrate this man’s misfortune. But I just don’t see why anyone should help the guy. He made his bed, let him lay in it and get out of the problem HIMSELF!
All I’m saying…. I had to get myself out of my own problems. It’s called SELF RESPONSIBILITY. Some of ya’ll don’t seem to get that…
and you guys are Conservatives. RIGHT!
Have a Nice day!

I will retract one point, partially…
Smitty sent me $20.00 once and I refunded it. Because he’s in a similar spot as me. In other words, he is just getting by. So, I couldn’t keep his money…
Just an FYI….

Actually, it is a basic tenet of Conservatism to “help thy neighbor”. That admonition comes from a pretty good book. It also speaks of pride and bragging. Pat, if I had known of you and your situation I would have helped because I do not like to see those who are helping, or trying to, themselves struggle alone and fail because no one would help. To that end, a day late and a dollar short, I am sorry you had to go throught what you did.

I’m currently married to a member of the recently unemployed, and can’t send Stogie anything more than good wishes. I am also in accounting, and in the past when DH was between gigs, I just went out and got a job. Accounting was always a great fallback. But not this time, that’s for sure.
As for Pat…sometimes I get trackbacks, sometimes I don’t. Amazingly enough, life goes on regardless. But here’s the deal – if you don’t think Stogie deserves your money, then by all means do not give it to him. That’s how charity is supposed to work.

I feel for Stogie, but am almost in the same boat. Fortunately, my wife saw the writing on the wall and we paid off everything we could before the “real” joblessness became a reality. Being in the construction business, the bursting of the housing bubble really hit us hard. We’re thankful for every little job I get, even if it’s only a few hours a week. No more mortgage, no more car payments, just the regular monthly utility bills. We even gave up our satellite TV service. Sometimes you got to start dropping things you didn’t think you could do without. We’ve been two months without TV and I don’t even miss it now.
All that to say that I wish the gentleman the best of luck, it’s all I’ve got to give right now.

Pat misunderstands “conservative values” entirely. Certainly, self-reliance and independence and toughing out the bad times are virtues, but equally so are compassion and charity towards our brothers. These are in no way mutually exclusive – we just don’t see the government seizing money from some people to distribute to others at its discretion as “compassion and charity” – it is instead confiscation and redistribution.
It is unfortunate that there was no one to step up and help Pat when he needed it, but this cannot justify disparaging an appeal for someone else. The bitterness he carries infects him as malignantly as any disease, and I pray he will be healed of it.
If the Kos or other leftist groups help out those in need of their own free will, they should be applauded for it. It is certainly not a contest as to which side or which blog can contribute the most, though. Jesus teaches first of all that we should not give alms publicly, taking credit for the act, but privately and secretly, and God will know. Furthermore, He also teaches that the poor widow who gives her last penny has done more than the rich man who gives a small fortune, because she has given everything she has.
I don’t mean to conflate conservative values with Christian theology, although I do believe in this case the latter informs the former. But this doesn’t mean leftists can’t be Christians, too – you can accept Christ no matter how stupid, sick, or perverted you are. In fact, it makes you an ideal candidate: “Those who are well need not a physician, but those who are sick.”

Heard about this need from Ms. Yockey’s site. It is a pleasure to help.
I hope the goal will be rich and passed.
