Shocker: David Frum Backs Marco Rubio?

Somewhat less surprising than if Charles Johnson or Conor Friedersdorf had endorsed him, but surprising nonetheless:
Crist continues to lead the polls. I expect that lead to fade as Republicans rally to Rubio and independents question the grounds for Crist’s candidacy. I hope that translates into a Rubio win, but I worry that a Rubio candidacy will be a tougher and harder fight than a Crist candidacy would have been: I don’t share the view that the conservative future belongs to Rubio’s hard-edged style of politics, especially not in a state like Florida. But all that is past helping. The GOP nomination race has a presumptive winner and Republicans of all stripes have a new standard-bearer.
Not exactly a full-throated “Wolverines” war cry, but probably the best we can expect from a Harvard-educated Canadian. Contrary to Frum’s worry-wart concerns, Crist is toast. Nobody respects a two-faced crapweasel, and I expect the backstabber to be a non-factor Nov. 2. As Allahpundit says, Sorry Charlie’s speech was repulsive:

Crist’s campaign staff has resigned en masse, which raises the question: Why did they hire on with that worthless political whore to begin with? I know we’re in a recession, but even GOP campaign operatives should try to maintain some shred of personal dignity . . .

In what poll does Crist lead ? Not the GOP primary and not in the general either …
Now that Crist is leaving the GOP its so nice to see Frum and Brooks decide that Rubio is OK … cowards and whimps …

Frum?! Dammit, that’s ANOTHER $20 I’ll never see again!
I thought we were gonna WIN this fall?! How does that happen with Frum on our side. That’s like playing water polo with an anchor strapped to your ankle…

Avlon too:

And I might as well reproduce this…
“A lot of us who supported Rudy Giuliani in 2008 also remember Charlie Crist’s auctioning his support to the highest bidder in the ‘08 primaries, first leading Giuliani to believe that he’d endorse Rudy’s candidacy, then switching to McCain when that looked a more promising route to the vice presidency.”

And Frum is relevant because . . . ?

“I don’t share the view that the conservative future belongs to Rubio’s hard-edged style of politics”
That’s because Frum is so… [sigh]compassionate. Better: Effeminate. Robust liberty requires a real pair and the discipline that comes with maturity. Anyone can be compassionate with another’s money a la Frum. It is the hard edge of “compassion” David never admits.
Poor soul. K has a point…

After criticizing all those “low brow” conservatives and getting the stink of a liberal in drag with a massive ego problem, he is trying to rebuild his reputation.
Someone should tell this scumbag and his dog faced wife, Marco is a fan of Levin. Fuck him and his wife

It says something unsavory about political operatives that Crist’s staff resigned en masse; did they just surprise him with that or did they warn him? It reminds me of the comments from Edwards staffers when the Hunter story finally proved out: they assured all and sundry that they were aware something hinkey was ongoing and that they would have acted to prevent his winning the nomination if it had looked likely. Sorry, campaign staff owes it to the candidate to not be enablers (Crist) nor to not take paychecks while plotting to stab the candidate in the back (Johnny E.)

Seems to me if the campaign staff signed on to help Crist because they thought he was a loyal Republican, and they believed him when he said he would never jump ship to run as an independent, then when he turns around and jumps ship — he’s stabbed them in the back.
