CPAC Day 1.0: Marco and Me

Posted on | February 18, 2010 | 10 Comments

WASHINGTON, D.C.
After sundry misadventures this morning, I’m now online in the Bloggers Lounge at CPAC. Last night, I got on an elevator here at the fabulous Marriott Wardman Park Hotel and thought I recognized one of my fellow passengers. “Excuse me, but you look familiar. I’m Robert Stacy McCain . . .”

“Hi, I’m Marco Rubio,” he said. I then mentioned that I started the Not One Red Cent blog. “Wow, yeah — that’s great!” said the future Senator from Florida, adding, “Hey, your camera’s pink.”

MORE TO COME . . .

I foolishly questioned the wisdom of having him challenge Charlie Crist (not my favorite Republican but better than the Democratic alternative). I do not question that wisdom now.

We should chose the most conservative candidates who can win. Rubio can win.

And I do not care about Charlie Crist being gay. It is strange he does not admit it, given Florida is not exactly Idaho, but my problems with Charlie stem from his wishy washy conservativism, not social issues. Ed Koch kept such matters to himself too, but he also did not marry a woman for cover. Crist does tend to be a fiscal conservative, and I like him for that.

We might see Crist pull a Specter and flip flop on parties. But would the Dems embrace him? And how would that play in Florida?
