A troubling story from New Orleans:

Alleging a plot to wiretap Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office in the Hale Boggs Federal Building in downtown New Orleans, the FBI arrested four people Monday, including James O’Keefe, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group’s credibility.
Also arrested were Joseph Basel, Stan Dai and Robert Flanagan, all 24. Flanagan is the son of William Flanagan, who is the acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, the office confirmed. All four were charged with entering federal property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.
According to the FBI affidavit, Flanagan and Basel entered the federal building at 500 Poydras Street about 11 a.m. Monday, dressed as telephone company employees, wearing jeans, fluorescent green vests, tool belts, and hard hats . . .

G. Gordon Liddy could have warned them. Let’s hope it’s a bum rap.

Hat-tip to Dan Riehl, who has more background.

UPDATE: Now the top thread at Memeorandum. Michelle Malkin writes:

This is neither a time to joke nor a time to recklessly accuse Democrats/liberals of setting this up — nor a time to whine about media coverage double standards. . . .
They are, of course, presumed innocent until proven guilty.
But for now, let it be a lesson to aspiring young conservatives interested in investigative journalism:
Know your limits. Know the law. Don’t get carried away. And don’t become what you are targeting.

Michelle also has lots more, including the official indictments (PDF).

There was “good freaky” today with the Ellie Light/Kossack “She’s A Man Baby” story.

This one is “bad freaky.” I get how a guy investigating the left’s hypocrisy when it comes to prostitution could go after Landrieu (who is one of the biggest health care whores of them all)–but this sounds bad.

Still, if the MSM jumps all over O’Keefe–the ACORN videos become part of the story. They are a big dog turd for the left and the more the left touches them the more shit gets on them.

It’s not looking good, Stacy. After reading, especially the affidavit, I’d say it’s Game, Set, and Match for Mr. O’Keefe.

Half the people reading that affidavit have one opinion and the other half have another–be nice to get something akin to consensus on whether this is trumped up or O’Keefe’s going to prison for eleventy-billion years.

This is not good. Maybe they got cocky with their previous success and thought they were either too good to get caught or above the law.
And why Landrieu’s office? She’s a back bencher.

No matter what happened here conservatives would be crazy and irresponsible to desert O’Keefe. If he gets little or no support, young conservatives contemplating something along the lines of what he did with ACORN will get the message that Holder’s FBI can pull some quick maneuver that will leave you alone and out in the rain.
If the kid truly was in major violation of the law and they can prove it, he needs friends and there is NO dishonor is helping a fellow man back to the straight and narrow. One can have more influence toward showing him the way if they are his friend and not someone who turned their back at the first sign of human frailty. If conservatives cannot be supportive and a force for good here maybe our time has not yet truly arrived.

This is not grade school this is real life. This is akin to breaking and entering. No matter which party you support; wrong is wrong! I would be willing to bet that these people will be let off with a slap on the hand. I believe they should be fined and serve prison time if found guilty. Which office is next ” Our President’s”,?

There is a lesson here – such as ‘do not screw around in a senator’s office in a federal building’. You know – the type of place where the local FBI office is just down the hall and around the corner past the men’s room.
